J. C. Stephenson; Abstraction, 1934

Where did all the Hampstead Intellectuals go?

This exhibition centres on the work of Stephenson, tracing his practice in Hampstead during the 1930s and 40s, when the area briefly became a vibrant centre of international modernism. Bringing together key works, it explores the tension between abstraction and figuration that shaped his approach, positioning him within — yet slightly apart from — a circle including Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. Set against the backdrop of the Mall Studios, once described as “a nest of gentle artists”, the exhibition offers a more intimate view of his sustained work in North London. It concludes with works by Kathleen Guthrie, whose close creative dialogue with Stephenson forms a subtle but vital counterpart.

David Evans: Twist and Shout

Three Highgate, in collaboration with Liss Llewellyn, is hosting David Evans – Twist and Shout, the first exhibition and celebration of Evans’ work since his retrospective at Salisbury in 2018, which itself took place 20 years after his untimely death in 1988. The exhibition reflects Three Highgate’s ongoing commitment to championing the legacies of post-war artists whose work may so easily be lost.
