UPCOMING EXHIBITION

J. C. Stephenson; Abstraction, 1934
oil, gouache, pencil and collage on canvas over panel, 23 x 46 cm
Where did all the Hampstead Intellectuals go?
This exhibition centres on the work of Stephenson, tracing his practice in Hampstead during the 1930s and 40s, when the area briefly became a vibrant centre of international modernism. Bringing together key works, it explores the tension between abstraction and figuration that shaped his approach, positioning him within — yet slightly apart from — a circle including Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. Set against the backdrop of the Mall Studios, once described as “a nest of gentle artists”, the exhibition offers a more intimate view of his sustained work in North London. It concludes with works by Kathleen Guthrie, whose close creative dialogue with Stephenson forms a subtle but vital counterpart.
